The Snow Show

The Snow Show 2006 will be held in the Italian Alps this year. As the name implies, monumental sculptures will be constructed completely from snow and ice. The show's official web site has some descriptions of the planned projects. You can view pictures of the 2004 Snow Show, which was held in Finland, here.

COOL! I wanna go!

When I was a kid, I always wanted to build an igloo. Every winter I tried, but the physics eluded me. The way some kids revel in building sand castles at the beach, that was my feeling about snow structures. There's just something so magical and ephemeral (hence the icon) about water in solid-but-malleable form.... And those projects that lit the structure from within with colored lights? Wow. Just gorgeous.

*whines* I want some snoooooooooowwww. I live in New Jersey, for God's sake! We're supposed to get winter here! :p

I agreee about the structures with the colored lights; they look like something out of a fairy tale to me. I hope you get some snow soon!

Wow!! Incidentally, I recently (last night) glimpsed a program on Japanese TV showcasing an "ice house" in Finland which had been designed by a Japanese architect. I didn't get any of the details (i.e. the name of the designer, etc.), unfortunately, since I only caught the very end of the feature (and then only because M had been watching it), but the style was very much in the same vein as these. Breathtaking, for sure, but probably a bit too cold for my taste!

Japan definitely seems to produce a lot of great architects! The ice house sounds interesting. :)
